A Call for Change. Dancing with belief systems and what is holding you back as a female entrepreneur
What you believe and what you expect is what will show up for you in your life. Every single thought that you have, whether conscious or subconscious, will create your reality.
To make a significant change in your life, you must take a moment to sit with your belief system. Do you believe that you can own a successful dance studio that offers you time and opportunities that will allow you to live the life of your dreams? Do you think that you can make money and support yourself abundantly? Do you even know what the life of your dreams looks like?
So many of the powerful women in the dance studio world have entered the profession with a deep desire to positively impact the lives of others. You want to make a difference in the world, and you know the power that dance holds to change lives, to change hearts.
The passion runs so deep within the body that the studio begins to take charge of what is innately yours. Your life.
If inner work is not consistently being done, the studio will prevent you from fully stepping into your role as the keeping CEO of your dance studio and YOUR life.
Many Dance Studio Owners have modeled their studio based off of what has already been created. The structure, systems, handbooks, season, and even the language echoed from studio owner to studio owner is very much the same. The culture of the dance studio world is so deeply embedded into the psyche, it is almost impossible to imagine a different way.
With that being said, the fundamental problem that I see within the dance industry is its resistance towards change and evolution. It is time to begin shifting from how you have always thought about owning a dance studio and leap towards a more revolutionizing way of teaching that encourages the development of the whole person. The dance program that you have created must focus on nurturing the mind, body, and Spirit, satisfying the needs of all parties involved; Studio Owners, Teachers, Parents, and Dancers.
While in many ways, dance has reached new heights and global recognition, the mindset of the dance studio owner, dance teacher, and even dancer has not changed. We are all stuck in this "struggling" artist mentality, and I even venture to question the subconscious patriarchal guidelines in which have shaped our ideas surrounding body imaging, beauty, and the adapted behavioral confines from which dancers are treated within companies and classrooms. I know way too many talented dancers who eventually take a hiatus from the industry to remember why they love to dance. I also am acutely aware of the fact that the industry itself is predominately female. Still, it seems that it is only the males within the industry who own the conventions/competitions or business coaching programs, who are making money AND being supported.
This may be due to the subconscious and social belief systems that have been deeply ingrained in the female psyche. Women have been socially programmed to downplay their success since entering the workforce. Many studies have been done regarding the social impacts of women vs. men. The injustices begin at an early age in which young girls are often described as pretty or cute, where a boy is considered smart and strong. These biases transition into the workforce where female entrepreneurs are often described as bossy, greedy, or a "bitch" rather than being seen as inspiring and successful.
This often leads to women downplaying their success or constantly battling the notion that their dance studio is a hobby versus a thriving business. Dance Studio Owners may also place themselves in what I call the "Studio Martyr System." This is when there is a tendency to offer "free" or sacrifice your own time and resources as an act of seeking validation from your clients, desperate to prove your own worthiness and hard work.
It is time for female entrepreneurs, you Badass Dance Studio Owner, Lady Boss, Creative Artist, Master Teacher- to stand in your power, knowing that it is possible to run a financially successful dance studio. You must shift your mentality from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance, knowing that there is more than enough success and inspiration to go around.
This shift also calls for the need to create a healthy and authentic support system amongst dance studio owners world-wide. We are all leaders in this movement towards creating more love, acceptance, and art in this world. We all are positively impacting the lives of so many people. We are teachers, and we are shaping the industry, creating a path for more love, acceptance, and individuality. There is no room for competition between us or tearing each other down. The time is now for us to create the industry the way we want it and for you to start living the life of your DREAMS.
"Everything is Energy, and that's all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want, and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics."- Albert Einstein
